Until the island was declared uninhabitable in 1859, the waves of the Zuiderzee pounded against Schokland. The Refuge Route takes you back to those times. Apart from the cultural highlights of this World Heritage Site, this walk also takes you through the Schokker forest, past marshlands and wet polders with rich nature. You can park your car for free at the Lichtwachterswoning car park on the Oud Emmeloorderweg, accessible from the A6, exit Nagele (N716). The car park is at the level of care farm Hof van Schokland, but on the other side of the road.

Dogs are welcome on this walking route, but please keep them on a leash. Along the way, there are benches to rest and enjoy the view. You will also pass visitor centre De Gesteentetuin, where there is a (disabled) toilet and coffee and tea are available. But please note: De Gesteentetuin has limited opening hours.
