Casteleynsplas

Casteleynsplas is a former sand extraction pit and the largest lake in the Northeast Polder. The water of the Casteleynsplas is very clean and fish-rich. Among others, huge catfish and windfish swim there. The clear water is eagerly used by the local diving club, the only one with a permit to dive here. Kingfishers nest in the steep banks.

Casteleynsplas is located just outside Emmeloord and was dug for the construction of the A6 motorway. The lake covers 23 hectares and is 18 metres deep at its deepest. The lake is surrounded by reed beds and forest strips with mostly oak and alder. A footpath runs around the lake, making it a popular spot for a walk, with or without a leashed dog.
