Food forest Emmeloord is a project of Foundation Pioneers of the Future, run by volunteers. In cooperation with IVN Noordoostpolder e.o., Landschapsbeheer Flevoland, Aeres Emmeloord and bee association Noordoostpolder-Urk, part of an existing forest has been transformed into a 6-hectare food forest.

Food forest Emmeloord is there for education for young and old, to produce ecological food, to walk in and enjoy nature. Volunteers are present on fixed working days to maintain and develop the forest. In the agenda you can find which activities are planned in addition.

When you enter the Food Forest through the Belgian barracks, you immediately see a sign with a large map on it. There are all kinds of paths and different areas in the Food Forest, which you can figure out in advance via the map. But you can also just stroll around, look around and maybe even get a bit lost, but don't panic: you can always find the barracks again.

What you can see (and taste!) all depends on the season, of course. There are all sorts of apple, pear, plum and nut trees, as well as berry and laurel bushes. In total, there are more than 1,800 of them. In spring, everything is in bloom and many bees and other insects are active in pollinating the fruit trees. You'll also find these insects a lot at this time of year in the stint garden, which is full of early spring blooms.

You will also find these insects a lot at this time of the year in the Steinzentuin, which is full of early spring blooms.

There is also an herb trail, which starts at the lawn near the barracks and winds right through the forest. In clearings, you pass herb and flower beds filled with edible herbs and flowers that you may pick here in small portions for your own use.

Not meant for self-picking are the vegetables grown by volunteers in the strip crops. You may admire the beans, potatoes, onions, garlic and whatever is currently growing, of course, but not take them for your own consumption. They are intended for sale, to cover the costs of the Food Forest. Every Wednesday from 09:00 to 12:00, you can buy these vegetables in the Belgian barracks. Every first Wednesday of the month, there is also a tasting of a recipe with a home-grown vegetable. Would you like to make that dish yourself at home? Then take the recipe with you for free.

In short: experience nature in the Food Forest Emmeloord! The forest is free to enter and open daily for visitors.
