From the cottage, you can walk across the grounds around the old lighthouse with the old breakwaters and lots of greenery. The property is located on a cycle junction route, including the Zuiderzeeoute, which runs along here. Within cycling distance are World Heritage Site Schokland, National Monument Waterloopbos and Netl de Wildste Tuin, as well as various former Zuiderzee harbour towns such as Vollenhove, Blokzijl and Kuinre.
Old Kraggenburg was an island in the former Zuiderzee with a lighthouse: a house with a lighthouse built on a mound. At the foot of this mound was a small inner harbour where sailing ships and steamboats could once take shelter during fog and storms. Old Kraggenburg has stood high above the surrounding fields since the reclamation of the Northeast Polder. It is a national monument and the site is open to the public only during open monument day.
